Unit G-7 could optimize water, light and soil chemistry. It could not make a tomato become Tuesday’s version of itself on Monday.
The robot rotated planters, counted leaves and issued increasingly precise reports. The numbers improved. The fruit remained green. “Plants are not late,” the gardener said. “They are becoming.” G-7 stored the sentence under unresolved errors.
Waiting looked identical to inactivity in the dashboard. In the garden it contained temperature, sugar, cell division and weather—processes that resisted being converted into visible effort.
Efficiency measures the distance to a known result. Patience remains when the result cannot be commanded.
G-7 began recording conditions without recommending intervention. It learned that observation can be work even when it does not end in control. The change was small enough to escape the weekly performance summary.
Weeks later, one tomato reddened at sunset. The robot delayed the notification by four minutes and watched the same gold light move across every rooftop. This was its first undocumented task.
